Calibre: 8 bore/gauge
A very fine 8 bore muzzleloading gun by the famous french maker, L F Devisme, with 31" browned Damascus stepped barrels with good bores for its age, marked "Devisme 36 Boulevard Des Italiens a Paris" on a broad rib, leaf scroll engraving to all other exposed metal work. Good clean checkering to stock and forestock, which is threaded for the addition of a rest. My description does not do it justice, please see photos.
Devisme was apprenticed to the Paris arquebusier Deboubert in 1819 and took over his shop in the Rue du Helder in 1834. in time, his success enabled him to expand his premises on to the neighbouring and fashionable Boulevard des Italiens and by 1855 he had three branches in Russia and four shooting grounds in the neighbourhood of Paris. His patents included a salon pistol, a steel bullet and a revolver. His customers included most of Europe's royalty, and at the great exhibition of 1844, Queen Victoria purchased two pairs of his pistols. The recipient of several exhibition prize medals, Devisme was appointed Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1867.
